THE handling of the murder case of Vina Dewi Arsita alias Vina Cirebon and Muhammad Rizky alias Eky, which occurred in 2016, is increasingly in the spotlight. This case is increasingly complicated following the determination of the suspect Pegi Setiawan was declared invalid by the Panel of Judges at the Bandung District Court.

Seven convicts in this case are trying to free themselves from life sentences. They reported witnesses Aep and Dede to the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit and plan to file a judicial review (PK) to the Supreme Court (MA).

A criminal law expert from Trisakti University, Abdul Fickar Hadjar, highlighted this case as an example of the phenomenon. no viral, no justicewhere legal handling often depends on how viral a case goes.

“When a criminal incident does not receive public attention or does not go viral, the handling of the case is often neglected,” said Abdul Fickar, on Sunday (14/7)

Abdul Fickar also criticized the hasty attitude of the National Police investigators in handling this case. According to him, the pressure to achieve performance targets can lead to careless handling and harm other parties.

“We have legal instruments such as pretrial motions in the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) to ensure that coercive actions by the police in investigations must be legally valid,” added Abdul Fickar.

He also called for improvements in the recruitment and training of investigators, as well as closer oversight of their work.

“The police are the state’s front line in dealing with the public, therefore they must operate with full respect for human rights,” concluded Abdul Fickar. (Z-10)
