Aldi’s sales are reported to have increased in 2022, but the supermarket chain is still operationally loss-making, writes Handelsblatt. According to this German economic newspaper, the company is facing a “major cost problem”. Aldi has made no official comment.
In Germany, the channel would still make a profit, but much less. In France and Denmark, on the other hand, negative figures were recorded. In Denmark, Aldi has sold stores to competitors, but in France the discounter wants to stay in business.
After Delhaize and Intermarché, social tensions also arise at Aldi
Details regarding Belgium are not known. Last month, Belgian unions sounded the alarm over a possible cost-cutting exercise, which was denied by management.
In addition, according to Handelsblatt, the plan to take over the computer system of Aldi Süd would also have been canceled. The Aldi Nord and Süd branches make joint purchases for some of their goods and a common computer system should facilitate this operation. According to Der Spiegel, the northern branch would have given up on this project because of the “lack of flexibility of the software”.
Also according to the Handelsblatt, Torsten Hufnagel, the boss of Aldi Nord, is currently working on “the biggest restructuring in the history of the company” in response to these problems. The goal is to become more efficient.
