Lithuanians

Lithuanian handball players hopelessly lost to the Hungarian national team, which came without most of its main players, 31:46 (14:22) in Klaipėda on Thursday and did not rise from the last place in the 6th selection group.

In the next match of this group, on Wednesday, the Swiss national team convincingly defeated Georgian handball players 26:19 (14:10).

With one round left before the end of the qualifying tournament, the two group leaders Hungary (10 points) and Switzerland (6 points) secured their tickets to the European Championships. The national teams of Georgia and Lithuania, each with 2 points, are fighting for the third place and a possible third ticket. For the time being, Georgian handball players are in third place due to better results in matches between themselves.

In the last round, Lithuanians will play in Switzerland and Georgians in Hungary on Sunday.

Possibilities

The selection competition takes place in eight groups. The four best third-placed teams will win tickets to the European Championship. In the standings of the third teams, their results achieved during the matches once morest the outsiders of the groups will be deleted.

Evaluating the situation in all groups, if the Lithuanian national team managed to win at least a point in Switzerland, it would probably be enough for the Lithuanians to get the right to play in the European Championships.

On the other hand, if there were a few surprises in the last round, the Lithuanian national team, which has a bad difference in goals scored and conceded, might not be able to win two points in Switzerland either.

Record

The Lithuanian national team achieved an unpleasant record in Klaipėda – the Lithuanians had never conceded so many goals during an official match.

Until Thursday, only the French national team had scored more than 40 goals once morest Lithuanians. In the fall of 2018, the French defeated our national team in Aix-en-Provence by 42:27.

The Hungarian national team also set a record for goals scored in this qualifying tournament on Thursday. Until this round, the record belonged to the Portuguese team, which crushed the Turks at home 44:27.

Roadmaps

In the fifth round, six teams secured their tickets to the European Championships. These are Croatia, Norway, Serbia, Czech Republic, Iceland and Switzerland.

All six of these teams had road wins on either Wednesday or Thursday.

After a tense battle, the Croats defeated the Greek national team, which became the discovery of this selection tournament, 31:26, the Norwegians crushed the Slovakian team 33:23, the Czechs defeated the Estonian handball players 32:30, the Icelanders crushed the Israeli team 37:26.

The match between the teams of Finland and Serbia took place dramatically. The Finns led 29-25 with 7.5 minutes left in the game, but then failed to score in a 29-30 loss.

Victory

The streaks of victories were extended by several teams who secured their tickets in the fourth round. This week, not only Hungarian, but also Portuguese, Austrian and French handball players achieved their fifth victory.

Meanwhile, the Slovenian team suffered its first defeat. The Slovenians lost to the team of Bosnia and Herzegovina 26:27 on the road.

Neighbours

The national teams of Estonia and Latvia found themselves in a different situation. Estonians are still fighting for a ticket, and Latvians lost the opportunity to enter the 2024 European Championships following the fourth round.

In 2020, the national team of Latvia, which played in the European championships for the only time, lost to the French team, the leader of the 8th group, on Wednesday at home with a double difference of 19:38 and suffered its fifth defeat.

The Estonian national team, which has never played in the European championships, lost 30-32 at home to the Czechs on Thursday, but can win a ticket even if they do not beat Iceland in the last round.

you will

The national team of the Faroe Islands, which has never participated in the European championships, is advancing. The handball players of the archipelago with only 54,000 inhabitants convincingly defeated the Ukrainian team 33:26 at home on Wednesday.

In the 4th group, the Austrians have already secured the first place. Three teams are fighting for the second and possible third ticket. Romanians and Faroese have 4 points each, Ukrainians – 2.

On Sunday, the national team of the Faroe Islands will play in Austria, and the Ukrainian team will host Romanian handball players in the German city of Gumersbach.

The situation of the Ukrainians is greatly complicated by the bad goal difference. Meanwhile, the Faroe Islands team can hope for a ticket even in case of defeat due to a good enough goal difference. If the Faroe Islands handball team pulls off a surprise in Austria and wins at least a point, the ticket will be in their pocket.

Tournament

The 16th European Men’s Handball Championships will be held on January 10-28, 2024 in Germany.

The host Germany and the winners of the previous championships, Sweden, Spain and Denmark, entered the final part without selection. Austria, France, Hungary, Portugal and Slovenia have already qualified for Germany in the qualifying tournament.

The selection competition takes place in eight groups, where four teams play each. The two strongest teams of each group and the four best third place teams will enter the final part. Third place teams will not count their matches once morest group outsiders.
