THW Kiel lost contact with the top of the table early on in the season. There is a home defeat against Melsungen. The North Hessians triumph in the north for the second time in a row.

Handball record champions THW Kiel suffered its second defeat of the season on the fourth Bundesliga matchday. There was the second home defeat in a row against MT Melsungen, 21:25 (8:15). The best THW thrower was Emil Madsen with six goals. Dainis Kristopans was successful seven times for North Hesse.

Four days after the 29:24 away win at champions SC Magdeburg, the Kiel team couldn’t play. The Melsungers took the 9:5 lead in the 19th minute. THW coach Filip Jicha then took his second time out very early on. “Now we have to do it smartly,” the Czech demanded of his players.

However, the trainer’s speech had no effect. The goalkeeper change from Andreas Wolff to Tomas Mrkva also didn’t work. The Spaniard Ian Barrufet made it 14:8 for the guests from a seven-meter penalty (28th), while his compatriot Erik Balenciaga gave the visitors a seven-goal lead at half-time.

Wolff parades are not enough to turn things around

In the second half, the Kiel team came up again thanks to Andreas Wolff, who returned between the posts. Right winger Lukas Zerbe shortened the score to 19:21 (52nd). But it was no longer enough for the North Germans.
