A Cricket Fan’s Solo Adventure in Guyana
He crossed continents for a chance to witness something extraordinary – and maybe escape the winter chill.
Alan Davis, a dedicated Hampshire Cricket fan, embarked on an adventure to Guyana. The global 20-over cricket competition, marking South America’s first stand-alone cricket event, brought Davis to its vibrant spirit, and the only Hampshire fan to make the journey.
“When else would you come to Guyana?” he remarked, captivated by the opportunity to experience something truly unique.
His trip was more than just supporting his team. It was a chance to explore맛.
“From my point of view, it’s another opportunity to see Hampshire somewhere new and somewhere different,” Davis explained. “To come out of the UK, and it was zero degrees when I left on Thursday morning, to come out here and it’s 32 degrees – it’s an absolute pleasure,” he continued, soaking up the tropical climate.
He has been exploring Guyanese capital Georgetown, embracing the local culture and atmosphere. “I’ve been walking around lots, thanks to my hotel receptionist telling me how very, very safe it is to walk around during the daytime, which is a luxury that I can do that – the players can’t,” Davis shared, acknowledging the difference in experience between fan and player.
“Hey, we’re now in December, and I’m watching cricket in 32 degrees – who can complain?” he exclaimed, highlighting the joy of witnessing the sport in such an idyllic setting.
His journey echoes Hampshire’s own. After a winning start, the Hawks have faced two consecutive defeats in the tournament. This leaves them in third place, trailing Guyana and Victoria, but with a chance to reach the final.
To secure a spot in Friday’s final and progress toward the impressive $1 million prize, Hampshire needs to win its final group game against top contenders Victoria. A thrilling battle awaits!
