On September 3 and 4, the Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, Abdellatif Hammouchi, participated in the work of the eighth INTERPOL meeting of the heads of security and police in the Middle East and North Africa region, which was held at the headquarters of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) in the French city of Lyon.
The Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance headed the delegation of the Kingdom of Morocco participating in the work of this important security meeting, which included the heads of security and police agencies in the Middle East and North Africa region, in addition to the countries of the Comoros, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan and Mauritania.
This meeting was an opportune occasion for the national security services of the Kingdom of Morocco to review their experience in confronting emerging crimes at the regional level, as well as to discuss emerging security challenges in the region, including combating organized crime and financial flows resulting from computer piracy, threats of recruitment and rapid radicalization on the Internet and financing through cryptocurrencies, and the risks of terrorist attacks using drones and atypical threats.
The Moroccan delegation also gave a comprehensive presentation on sharing expertise and information related to combating cybercrime and its emerging forms, especially in light of the escalating threats posed by the misuse of new technologies for criminal or terrorist purposes.
The meeting also featured INTERPOL’s review of various IT solutions, applications and databases that highlight the International Criminal Police Organization’s response to new threats and risks, including the development of INTERPOL’s biometric platform, assessment of international criminal threats and measurement of INTERPOL’s analysis and information network, as well as the support and assistance mechanisms that INTERPOL can provide to member countries in the field of training and combating various forms of transnational crime.
On the sidelines of this meeting, the Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance, Abdellatif Hammouchi, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Niall Goton, the new Director of the Cybercrime Department at Interpol, in which they discussed projects and prospects for joint cooperation between Morocco and the International Criminal Police Organization in the field of neutralizing and combating risks associated with the use of technology in criminal and terrorist projects.
The Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance also made a field visit during which he was briefed on the tasks of the “Interpol Command and Coordination Centre”, located at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the International Criminal Police Organization, and discussed with the officials of this centre the mechanisms for strengthening joint cooperation in matters of cross-border investigations and international prosecutions of wanted and internationally wanted persons.
In the context of the work of this meeting, the Moroccan delegation also held talks, whether bilaterally or multilaterally, with officials of the Interpol organization and security and police agencies in the Middle East and North Africa region, which addressed ways to coordinate efforts to confront security challenges and risks, from a joint and collective perspective capable of keeping pace with the regional and international extensions of organized crime and terrorism.
