On the fifth day of the truce between Israel and Hamas, the group considered terrorist by the European Union or the United States handed over 12 hostages to the Red Cross.
The exchanges continue. This Tuesday, November 28, a new group of hostages held in Gaza since the Hamas attacks on October 7 was released by the Palestinian organization. In exchange, Israel released 30 imprisoned Palestinians, according to the truce agreement which was extended by 48 hours on Monday.
Early in the evening, several women accompanied by masked Palestinian fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Rafah, in the south of the Palestinian territory near the Egyptian border.
The twelve released hostages, “ten Israelis and two foreigners”, were “taken to Israeli hospitals where they will be reunited with their families”, said the Israeli army, which confirmed their arrival in Israel via Egypt.
A minor and dual nationals
Among the released Israeli hostages is a 17-year-old minor, Mia Leimberg, accompanied by her 59-year-old mother, Gabriela Leimberg. The other eight are women aged 36 to 84, whose names were revealed by the Israeli government.
At the time of the release, the spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Minister, at the heart of the negotiations, indicated that one hostage had Austrian nationality, two were Argentinian and another Filipino.
According to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the two freed foreigners are of Thai nationality. No further information has been released by Israeli authorities.
Hamas hostages: how were the three freed Franco-Israeli children taken care of?
Every day since November 24, Hamas has released around ten women and children kidnapped during its bloody attack on October 7 in Israel, compared to the release of three times as many Palestinian prisoners.
The truce agreement, also negotiated with the support of Egypt and the United States, has so far enabled the release of 60 Israeli hostages and 180 Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli prisons.
21 foreign hostages, mostly Thais living in Israel, were released outside the framework of this agreement.
