According to a media report, rockets were fired at Israel once more at the beginning of the new year. As the Times of Israel newspaper reported on New Year’s Eve, the terrorist organization Hamas fired more than 20 rockets towards Israel. Most were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. The sirens were sounding in several places in the center of the country and in the south of Israel.

Hamas’ armed wing said the shelling was in response to “massacres of civilians” in the Gaza Strip. According to the emergency services, no injuries were initially reported, the Times of Israel reported.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army was preparing itself organizationally for a longer fight once morest the Hamas terrorists. As army spokesman Daniel Hagari announced on Sunday evening, some reservists will be allowed to temporarily return to civilian life. “The objectives of the war require a prolonged fight and we are preparing accordingly,” he said. “We adapt our style of warfare and the forces required for each area in the Gaza Strip to best fulfill the mission, as each area has different characteristics and different operational needs.”

Some of the reservists will “return to their families and their jobs” this week, Hagari continued. This will ease pressure on Israel’s economy and allow reserve soldiers to “gather strength for the activities ahead” in the new year. The fighting would continue and the reservists would still be needed. In addition, the training of all officers is continuing. After their experience in the fight in the Gaza Strip, they would receive further training in order to then strengthen the ranks of the commanders, said Hagari.

There has been war between Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Israel for almost three months. The trigger was the worst massacre in Israel’s history on October 7th, in which terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups murdered around 1,200 people in Israel and abducted around 240 others to the Gaza Strip. Israel responded with massive air strikes and a ground offensive. The government’s goal is the complete destruction of Hamas. The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war has risen to 21,822, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority in Gaza. The number cannot currently be independently verified.
