Palestinian group Hamas said that it held discussions with the Fatah movement regarding the formation of a committee to address the needs and problems of the Gaza Strip, Palestine, during a meeting in Cairo.

“After discussions with various Palestinian factions, we held a meeting with our brothers in Fatah at the invitation of Egypt,” Hamas leader Osama Hamdan said in a video message.

According to Hamdan, the two parties discussed various national issues, especially the war in Gaza and how to work together to face the Israeli occupation plan and its supporters, based on a consensus to reject all forced arrangements.

“Many ideas were discussed, including the formation of a committee to handle Gaza’s affairs and needs on various issues and conditions allowing the formation of a national unity government,” he said.

Both parties emphasized that managing and handling the affairs of the Palestinian people, whether in Gaza, the West Bank or the diaspora, is a purely Palestinian matter that must be based on national consensus.

He emphasized Hamas’ commitment to continue meetings and communication with Fatah and all Palestinian factions to achieve the best solution and framework that is beneficial for the Palestinian people, especially those in Gaza.

On Saturday, an Egyptian source announced the start of discussions between Fatah and Hamas in Cairo to explore forming a committee to handle Gaza affairs while continuing efforts to reach a ceasefire in the region, Al-Qahera el-Ekhbariya news channel reported.

Israel has continued to carry out devastating attacks in Gaza since Hamas’ offensive last October, despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire.

Nearly 43,300 people have been killed, mostly women and children, and more than 102,260 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza. (Anadolu/Z-2)
