CAIRO, March 3 (Xinhua) — A high-level delegation from the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) which runs Gaza arrived in Cairo on Sunday to hold talks with Egyptian officials on a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, according to a security official.
The delegation, led by Hamas deputy leader in Gaza Khalil Al-Hayya, is expected to negotiate a truce in the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, which begins next week, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The anticipated deal will include an exchange of 40 Israeli hostages for 400 Palestinian prisoners, and an increasing number of aid trucks to the besieged enclave, he revealed, adding that an Israeli delegation is expected to arrive Sunday evening for the truce negotiations.
Israel launched a major campaign in Gaza following Hamas struck Israeli communities, killing some 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 200 others on October 7.
Since then, Israeli reprisals have led to the deaths of 30,320 Palestinians and injured 71,533, according to the latest data released Saturday by the Gaza health authority. END
