Gaza City: Hamas announced that the brigade commander in charge of northern Gaza, Ahmed al-Khandour, and three top military leaders were killed in an Israeli attack. Hamas released the information on Sunday. It is not clear that they were killed.
One of the commanders killed was Ayman Ziyam, the head of the rocket unit of Al Qassam, the armed wing of Hamas.
Ahmed is the most senior Hamas leader to be killed in the seven-week war. He is a former member of Hamas’s Shura Committee and a member of the Politburo. Ahmed survived three assassination attempts by Israel since 2002.
Known as Abu Anas, he was extradited to the US in 2017. He was included in the list of global terrorists. Financial sanctions were also imposed on him.
He is said to have masterminded the 2006 attack on an Israeli military post on the Kerem Shalom border. Two Israeli soldiers were killed and four wounded.
