Halloween brings 60 million euros in sales to retailers

Halloween brings additional sales of around 60 to 65 million euros to domestic retailers, the trade association (HV) reported on Tuesday. “That is a little more than in the previous year, but the gains will be completely eaten up by inflation,” said HV managing director Rainer Will. A survey of 1,000 people by MindTake Research showed that the average expenditure for the horror festival on October 31st will be 50 euros across Austria.

Halloween fans in the west are the most generous: Tyrol and Vorarlberg are far ahead with per capita spending of 66 euros, followed by Vienna with around 57 euros and the south of the country with 50 euros. Halloween is spent more sparingly in Upper Austria and Salzburg with 46 euros, while in Lower Austria and Burgenland the planned expenditure is only an average of 40 euros.

Sweets are at the top of shopping lists (47 percent). Pumpkins and snacks (29 percent each), spooky decorations (23 percent), alcoholic drinks (17 percent) and costumes (twelve percent) are also popular Halloween products.

Families with children and those under 35 are particularly invested in the horror festival. However, people over 60 have little use for the custom, which originally comes from Ireland and spread widely through immigrants in the USA. In general, according to the trade association, the number of people who are not interested in Halloween has recently increased: According to the survey, overall, 40 percent of people in Austria do not want to buy anything for it; last year it was 35 percent.

This may also have something to do with the continuing deterioration in consumer sentiment: According to “HV-ConsumerCheck”, more than two thirds of the population (68 percent) have further restricted their spending in the past few weeks. Savings are most often made in the areas of watches, jewelry and clothing, followed by furniture and home accessories. When asked regarding the prospects for the next twelve months, 58 percent were pessimistic and only 18 percent were optimistic. “The HV consumption barometer has fallen to its lowest level in two years,” stated the trade association. Back then, in November 2021, the last general Corona lockdown was just around the corner.
