Halkidiki: A dead dolphin washed up in Nea Heraklia

According to the relevant announcement of the environmental organization “ARION”, yesterday morning the Central Port Authority of Thessaloniki was informed about the splashing of a dolphin. As they mention in the relevant post, it is an adult, female, common dolphin (Delphinus delphis).

The dolphin had an obvious external wound behind its right side fin. The wound was likely caused by a sharp object and may have caused the death of the animal, while a rope was tied to the tail fin, according to the environmental organization.

The animal was floating dead in the sea and was taken to the beach of Nea Heraklia in Halkidiki by Mr. Andreas Nasioudi.

“Common dolphins (but which are in danger of extinction) are marine mammals that live mainly pelagically and are observed in the wider area of the Northern Aegean. Due to lack of food, however, they may approach fishing boats, fish farms or areas where they may find food. We should realize that dolphins do not threaten us and that their home is the marine environment that we humans visit,” the environmental organization emphasizes.

It is noted that “ARION” is the coordinator of the Cetacean Effusions Management Group, (according to the KYA Y.P.EN./DDFPB/55417/1958_F.E.K. 3376/B’/19-5-2023) which refers to the “National Network for Monitoring and Management of Marine Wildlife Spawnings”.
