Mr. Alongkorn Phonbut Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture added that Thailand has a very high chance to be the second largest rice exporter in the world and will successfully overtake Vietnam this year. If exports exceed 7 million tons
Looking at Thai rice export data in the first half of the year and the US Department of Commerce report, it is estimated that in the 2021-2022 production cycle, world rice production may be around 505.4 million tons, up 1.9 million from the previous year. tonnes, while in 2022 the world rice trade volume may reach 46.4 million tonnes, an increase of regarding 100,000 tonnes from 2021.

Vietnam is expected to be the world’s third largest rice exporter with a total volume of 6.3 million tonnes following India and Thailand. In that order, Vietnam has been the No. 2 rice exporter for several years in a row. The amount of rice exports that will decline in 2022 will make Vietnam the third highest rice exporter.
“It is expected that we will export at least 7-7.5 million tons of rice throughout the year, higher than in 2021, and have a chance to overtake Vietnam to become the world’s No. 2 rice exporter this year. Looking at Vietnam’s rice export statistics, the first five months of this year (Jan-May) exported 2.77 million tons of rice, an increase from the same period of 2021. with an export volume of 2.59 million tons, or an increase of 6.95 percent, with an export value of $1.35 billion Decrease from the same period in 2021 with export value of $1.41 billion. or a decrease of 4.26 percent, the average Vietnam exports 500,000 tons per month. while Thailand exports on average per month. 600,000 tons, expanding both in quantity and value.”

(903.3 million US dollars)
However, the export situation still needs to be monitored in the second half of the year. If the export level exceeds 600,000 tons per month, the annual export will exceed 7 million tons.
This depends mainly on the baht value and the output of the main exporting countries and the export price of each country. It is an advance in rice policy that focuses on the development of rice varieties according to the production market strategy between the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Commerce using new agricultural machinery and technology to reduce costs, increase yields, as well as upgrading large plots of rice Meanwhile, there are still some risk factors related to the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian war that has caused the cost of rice production from rising prices of fertilizers and energy, as well as the global economic slowdown since the outbreak of COVID-19.
