A gunman killed at least 7 people in two attacks in California on Monday, just two days following a shooting claimed 11 lives at a popular California dance hall.
The attacks on Monday occurred in two separate locations in the coastal city of Half Moon Bayregarding 50 km south of San Francisco.
And they came as the state mourns the deaths in Asian-majority Monterey Park during Lunar New Year celebrations.
The suspect in Monday’s shootings was identified as Zhao Chunli67, who was filmed on news cameras turning himself in to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office regarding two hours later.
The first four victims were discovered at a mushroom farm at around 2:22 p.m. local time (0022 GMT), while the other three were later found at a nearby trucking business.
The researchers have not yet provided a motive for this attack.
San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said at a news conference that the suspect was arrested following driving to a local police station.
He was found with a semi-automatic pistol that may have been used in the attack and is currently “cooperating” with police, it added.
Corpus specified that an eighth victim is being treated at the hospital and is in critical condition.
“This type of shooting is horrible,” he said. “It’s a tragedy we hear regarding all too often, but today it has come home here in San Mateo County.”
The sheriff also indicated that among the witnesses are children who had just left school and live on the rural property.
“That children witness this is indescribable”lament.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted: “I was in the hospital with the victims of a mass shooting when I was pulled aside to inform me of another shooting.” “This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy following tragedy.”
Debbie Ruddock, a Half Moon Bay council member, told NBC that the victims were Chinese farm workers.
San Mateo County Board of Supervisors Chairman Dave Pine told the AP that the attacks were carried out by a “disgruntled worker”.
“We are sickened by today’s tragedy in Half Moon Bay,” Pine said in a statement. “The scourge of gun violence has unfortunately struck home.
“We haven’t even had time to grieve for the people lost in the horrific shooting in Monterey Park. Gun violence must stop.”
