Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry has formally resigned to make way for a transitional council in the country, which has been marked by intense violence in recent weeks.
“We have served the nation in difficult times. I thank all those who had the courage to face these challenges with me.”Henry explained in a letter dated Wednesday, April 24.
The interim prime minister will be the Caribbean nation’s finance minister, Michael Patrick Boisvert.
The crisis in Haiti began last February, with violence in the streets following Henry’s own announcement that elections would be held before August of next year. The people’s anger was aroused because, according to the president, an agreement signed in 2022the official was due to leave his post in February of this year.
“We are pleased to announce our commitment to a transitional governance agreement that will pave the way for a peaceful transition of power, continuity of governance, and an action plan for short-term security and a path to free and fair elections.”Guyana’s president said in March, Arfaan Aliwho announced Henry’s decision in March.
The Transitional Council is expected to exercise presidential powers until a new president, elected in Elections scheduled for February 2026take office.
