Sixteen members of the same family were found dead in their home in an isolated mountain community in southern Haiti, an official said today. Local media reported that the deaths occurred a day following the family attended a funeral.

The dead were found in a house in the city of Seguin, which is regarding 50 kilometers south of the capital Port-au-Prince.

The causes of death of the 16 people are not clear. Local witnesses told Reuters that it may be a group poisoning.

Police and health officials were sent to the area to investigate the case, said commissioner Jean-Pierre Michel Lafontan, the top official in the Southeast Haiti region.

The deaths do not appear to be linked to the activity of armed gangs that have grown in strength in recent years, thanks in part to the money they earn through extortion or kidnapping. Last year alone, the actions of these gangs claimed the lives of nearly 5,000 people, according to a United Nations report.
