Haiti declares state of emergency in 14 municipalities

This Wednesday, July 17, 2024, the Prime Minister of HaitiGarry Conille, announced that the government has declared a state of emergency in cities controlled by gangs that have been wreaking havoc in the Caribbean country for months.

“Authorities have declared a state of emergency in 14 municipalities under the control of gangs. The state of emergency will allow the government to have the necessary tools to act, confront the bandits and reestablish the authority of the State,” said the leader.

«On Wednesday evening, the Conille authorized the national police, the Haitian army and the Kenyan force to carry out operations in the affected areas according to previously established plans. The main purpose is to regain control of all areas currently dominated by gangs, through a house-by-house, neighborhood-by-neighborhood and city-by-city process.»

“I ask the population of the affected municipalities to remain alert and keep calm,” the president said.

Before his speech, a government official told AFP that the areas affected by the measures were in the Western departments, which include Port-au-Prince, and in Artibonite, north of the capital.

These two areas are among the most affected by the activities of armed groups in Haiti, who control 80% of Port-au-Prince and have been accused of committing murders, rapes, robberies and kidnappings.
