4 million euros in damage from severe storms within 24 hours
Vienna (OTS) – (Austrian hail insurance, June 9, 2023): After yesterday’s heavy rainfall with rainfall of up to 80 liters per square meter within 90 minutes and total agricultural damage of 750,000 euros, Styria was once more hit by severe storms in the late followingnoon: heavy rain, Hail and storm ravaged on 3,300 Hectares agricultural land with Arable crops (corn, pumpkin, soybeans, cereals), vineyards and fruit crops. The districts are affected Graz area and Southeast Styria. “Unfortunately, agriculture in Styria does not come to rest. Within 24 hours, there was a total damage in agriculture of 4 million euros, of which today’s storm alone accounts for more than 3.2 million euros. In addition to the hail damage to agricultural crops, the ground in many places was no longer able to absorb water due to the massive rainfall in the last few hours. Floods are the logical consequence. The soil consumption certainly also plays a decisive role in the damage caused by flooding, since built-up soil can no longer absorb water. The damage assessment by the experts from the Austrian hail insurance company has already begun so that the compensation payments can be made quickly,” says the responsible provincial director in Styria, Ing. Josef Kurz.
Overview of today’s damage in agriculture:
- Affected districts: Graz area, south-eastern Styria
- Affected crops: arable crops (maize, pumpkin, soybeans, cereals), vineyards and fruit crops
- Affected agricultural area: 3,300 hectares
- Total damage to agriculture from today’s storm: 3.2 million euros
