European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today unveiled the line-up she wants for her second Commission. Among the names revealed was that of Belgian Hadja Lahbid (MR).
In the news: Lahbib will normally become the new European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management and Equality.
- The appointment comes as the European Commission President is in Strasbourg to unveil the composition of her potential future team to European Parliament group leaders.
- Lahbib would therefore inherit the portfolio of the current Slovenian minister Janez Lenarčič and not that of migration, as rumours had suggested.
- It is a less challenging portfolio, but one that remains vital for Europe, as it means being able to respond quickly to disasters and provide ongoing support to populations affected by international crises.
Lahbib still has to prove himself
Note: But her appointment is not yet certain. The outgoing Foreign Minister still has to prove herself and, above all, pass her hearing before the European Parliament.
- Each Commissioner must first pass an individual hearing in Parliament, where MEPs test the knowledge and skills of the future Commission.
- If they pass this test, they will be appointed to the position for which they took the exam.
