The cabaret artist Josef Hader was awarded the 50th German cabaret prize yesterday. German stand-up comedian Till Reiners was also honored in Mainz, Germany. Pop musician Katie Freudenschuss received the 2022 cabaret prize in the music category, while accordionist Carmela de Foe was honored in the cabaret category.
Thomas Freitag received the honorary award of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. He has been writing German cabaret history for 45 years and, with 18 programs in the meantime, has “satirically brought four governments to their knees,” it said.
The award is considered the oldest of its kind in Germany. Prizes are awarded in the categories of cabaret, chanson/song/music and cabaret, plus a sponsorship prize from the city of Mainz and the state. The German cabaret prize is endowed with a total of 30,000 euros. It was first awarded in 1972 to Hanns Dieter Hüsch (1925-2005).
