Faced with increasingly obvious risks, the platform recently unveiled new security features to offer “more confidentiality and more control over messages”.
In the preamble to its blog post, the company said that “At WhatsApp, we believe your messaging should be just as private and safe as your in-person conversations.”
Solutions for strengthening security:
Thus, the first novelty is to better control the transfer of WhatsApp account to another device. To further protect users’ accounts, WhatsApp will soon ask for change confirmation when transferring WhatsApp account to another device.
In this sense, the messaging service explained that “from now on we may ask you to confirm this change on your old device as an additional security measure”.
This feature can thus alert if a person tries to use the account of another user, by displaying a window asking if the transfer of the account is authorized. Once the transfer request has been validated, there will be no trace of the transferred account on the old device.
The second feature will be able to fight malware that seeks to send unwanted messages. To do this, “checks are introduced to authenticate the account and better protect the user if their device has been compromised”, warns WhatsApp. This technology is transparent and should block the actions of hackers with no effect on the messaging user.
Finally, WhatsApp introduces “Key Transparency” to avoid any dialogue with a scammer. It’s a new fast and efficient device that will instantly check if the conversation is secure, and ensure that the person with whom the user is corresponding is not an impostor.
As an ultimate objective, the service hopes to better protect the accounts of its users with these new features which will be offered in the coming months on the phones of regular users of the platform.
