The number of cybercriminals operating on the dark web who are focusing their attacks on Mac computers has increased significantly, according to Accenture’s Cyber Threat Intelligence (ACTI) unit.

The company’s data suggests that there has been a huge increase in cyberattacks on Macs — that’s ten times higher than in 2019, with the majority of incidents taking place in the past 18 months.

While Accenture acknowledges that threats have been targeted primarily at Windows and Linux devices in the past, it’s hard to pinpoint which Mac users are safer than the average for other PCs. The ACTI team claims that they have seen a vast dark web community of skilled cybercriminals specifically targeting Macs.

As part of Accenture’s report, the company highlighted some of these Mac-specific threats, such as that hackers are creating Mac-specific ransomware strains, as well as other cyber-attack techniques that are being sold at a higher price compared to those made for Windows PCs.

“A combination of increased use of macOS in enterprise environments, high potential gains from threat actors willing and able to target macOS, and growing demand for macOS tools and products suggest that this trend will continue,” suggests the report on the increased interest of hackers in the system.
