Vienna (OTS) – A medical association president who is being investigated by the public prosecutor’s office, who has triggered a house search at the ÄK through his opaque activities and who is now removing doctors from their positions who want to come to terms with his past; always new tricks to undermine the legality of meetings and decisions and now also the attempt to loudly take over a meeting of the Vienna Medical Association with physical violence against the head of the Equip4Ordi investigative commission.

Appoint government commissioner, call new elections

The MFG medical group around DDr. Christian Fiala welcomes the announced intervention by Vienna City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker, whose area of authority includes MA 40 as the ÄK’s supervisory authority. He must now take immediate and decisive action against the machinations surrounding President Steinhart so that the ÄK can finally work normally again and carry out its actual task – representing the interests of doctors and thus health care for the population. As requested several times by Fiala and colleagues (most recently on August 18, 2023), a government commissioner should be appointed urgently and new elections should be held – as provided for in the law (Section 195b ÄG).

Rival officials financed through compulsory membership

“In my view, there is a significant risk of President Steinhart obscuring the investigation into possible criminal proceedings at the subsidiary Equiq4Ordi. As long as he is in office, he has many opportunities to conceal possible criminal offenses and destroy evidence,” said Fiala. “It cannot be the case that groups financed by compulsory contributions and fighting for power damage the reputation and ability to act of the chamber and ultimately the entire health system,” said Fiala. And further, “the current events in the ÄK are a further argument for abolishing compulsory membership, because no doctor can be explained why he has to finance a chamber that, according to the report of a criminal law professor, is even suspected of having formed a criminal organization /Ö1 Mittagsjournal, March 29, 2023.
