in light of the looming threat of US tariffs on European goods under the trump administration, Germany’s outgoing Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has called for a renewed focus on innovation, infrastructure, and new technologies within Europe.

“If there is a problem, it has to be solved,” Habeck stated, emphasizing that Germany’s past underinvestment in its armed forces, the Bundeswehr, has created a security vulnerability.
While acknowledging that President Trump’s demands for NATO members to increase their defense spending to 5% might be a contributing factor,Habeck insisted that his decision was purely driven by Germany’s urgent needs.
“I think trump takes a entirely different approach,” he observed. “He just throws out some number or other, and if we were at 5% now, he would say 9. […] That is not my way of thinking. It is simply necessary to do what has to be done, that is all,” he added.
