Borussia Dortmund withstood its 3-2 victory at Hoffenheim on Saturday, reducing the difference with Bayern Munich, the leaders of the German Football League, as Erling Haaland scored his 56th goal in 57 league matches.
Dortmund raised its score to 43 points, three points behind Bayern, who visit Hertha Berlin on Sunday. Dortmund sought their third win in three league games this year, and started strong when Haaland gave him the lead following six minutes from Donel Mallen’s pass, who made all the goals.
This is the 16th goal for Haaland, who went off injured in the 63rd minute, in the league this season. And Andrej Kramaric equalized for Hoffenheim with a superb direct shot in stoppage time for the first half. Dortmund regained their lead through Marco Reus in the 58th minute following a quick attack.
Hoffenheim’s situation worsened when David Raum accidentally put the ball into his own net as he tried to clear Mallen’s pass as Dortmund advanced 3-1.
Hoffenheim, who is competing to qualify for the Champions League this season, revived his hopes, as Giorgiono Rotter reduced the difference following a pass from Moanes Dabour, but Dortmund held out to win. Hoffenheim fell to sixth place with 31 points.
Bayer Leverkusen maintained its third place with 35 points with a 5-1 victory over Augsburg thanks to Moussa Diaby’s hat-trick. Union Berlin jumped to fourth place with a 2-1 victory over its host, Borussia Moenchengladbach.
