To the question of what György Ligeti would have been capable of with today’s technology in electronic music, students from music colleges from three countries are looking for an answer in collaboration with the Budapest House of Hungarian Music. The experimental works will be presented for the first time on November 25th at 7 p.m. in the Vienna Klangtheater of the Future Art Lab.
On the occasion of György Ligeti’s 100th birthday, a series of programs with advanced training courses and Performances arose. The students delegated by the institutions examine György Ligeti’s composition methods and use them to compose new electroacoustic works, which will be performed at prominent locations in all three cities. The premiere will take place on November 25th at 7 p.m. in Vienna, the venue for the concert will be the sound theater of the Future Art Lab.
György Ligeti composed three pieces in the WDR studio between 1956 and 1958, but later did not continue his research into electronic music. What he wanted to achieve with good quality electronics would have been far too complex and labor-intensive with the resources available to him at the time. The 100.101 project invites participating students to explore the composer’s oeuvre in a creative process. Using computers, analogue/digital synthesizers and algorithmic processes, they attempt to imagine what would have happened if the composer had had access to faster and better technology.
After the premiere in Vienna, the experimental concert can be heard on December 5th in Budapest in the Klangdom of the Haus der Musik and then on January 31st in Berlin.
