The Gyeonggi Provincial Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 9th that it will carry out a surveillance project for Aedes aegypti, a mosquito vector, until October as the number of dengue fever patients in the province is increasing.
Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito infected with the dengue virus, and following an incubation period of 3 to 14 days, symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, and muscle pain appear.
There is currently no preventive vaccine or treatment.
The number of dengue fever patients in the province, which was 84 in 2019, decreased drastically to 13 in 2020 and 0 in 2021 due to the influence of Corona 19, etc., and then increased once more to 24 last year and 9 by March of this year.
Accordingly, the Provincial Health and Environment Research Institute collects Aedes gnats every week from six points in the Suwon area, including Chilbosan Mountain and Gyeonggi Sangsang Campus Park, and investigates the population density and virus to respond in advance to the occurrence of mosquito-borne infectious diseases.
If the virus is detected from collected mosquitoes, it will be promptly notified to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local governments.
An official from the Provincial Health and Environment Research Institute said, “The number of dengue fever patients is increasing due to the recent increase in overseas travel and global warming, so it is recommended to visit a medical institution immediately if symptoms of infection such as fever occur.”
