Gwyneth Paltrow won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in ‘Shakespeare in Love’ in 1998, a major honor that did not only have desirable effects for the star. At just 26, the American actress has drawn both praise and criticism, and she now claims the British press was not very kind to her at the time.

On the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, Gwyneth recalled, “I felt a big change that night because until that day it seemed like everyone was supporting me. And suddenly I won an Oscar and things changed a lot.”

At the time, no one knew that Bruce, the actress’s father, had cancer. He died in 2002.

“He was in really bad shape” confided the star. “It was such an emotional moment and I was 26. I cried on stage and people were so mean to me. I thought ‘Wow, there’s a big change of opinion. I think I’m going to have to be less sincere and become more reserved. I remember I was working in England and the English press was very mean because I cried. They didn’t know my dad had cancer.”
