Minister Rutten was questioned in committee by Klaas Slootmans (Vlaams Belang) on the application of the language law in municipalities with facilities. During the debate, Nadia Sminate (N-VA) asked if, as minister, Gwendolyne Rutten would repeat that she campaigned in French, whereas now her function requires supervising the application of the language law, very sensitive in Flemish Brabant.

“In the past, I campaigned not only in French, but also in English, German and Arabic,” replied the main interested party. “If I have a message to convey, I do it in the language I want. This is the right I have as a free citizen in this country,” she added.

“I almost fell off my chair,” commented Klaas Slootmans. “The Minister of Internal Affairs, who is supposed to guarantee the linguistic law, assures that she has and will continue to campaign in Arabic and other foreign languages. So how can we force French speakers to respect the language law here?” asks the nationalist MP.

The opposition party calls on Jan Jambon to call his minister to order “If the N-VA, and more particularly Minister-President Jan Jambon, still has a Flemish reflex, he will publicly call Gwendolyne Rutten to order.”
