Gwangju and Jeonnam dam storage volume increased by 17.5 million tons in the national rain… ‘Should be lowered by up to 470mm’|The Dong-A Ilbo

It is expected that the difficulties in Gwangju and Jeonnam, which are suffering from severe drought due to the recent heavy rain, will be resolved to some extent.

According to the Ministry of Environment on the 7th, on the 4th and 5th, an average of 55mm of rain fell in four places in the Yeongsan River and Seomjin River basins, including Seomjin River, Juam, Sueo, and Pyeongrim Dam, increasing the amount of water storage by a total of 17.5 million tons.

By dam, the amount of water stored in Juam Dam increased by 11.8 million tons due to 69 mm of rain, and the amount of water stored in Sueo Dam increased by 2.3 million tons with 103 mm of rain. The Seomjingang Dam increased its storage capacity by 3.3 million tons with a rain of 31mm, and the Pyeongrim Dam by 100,000 tons with a rain of 55mm.

With this rainfall, a total of 14.1 million tons of additional water was secured, which can be supplied to Juam Dam and Sueo Dam for regarding 10 days to Gwangju City, Jeollanam-do, and Yeosu and Gwangyang Industrial Complexes.

It is predicted that the water will move even following the rain and the water storage will increase further.

However, in order to recover to the normal level, the Ministry of Environment believes that Juam Dam, Seomjingang Dam, 470mm, and Pyeongnim Dam need regarding 240mm more rain.

Son Ok-joo, Director-General of Water Resources Policy at the Ministry of Environment, said, “We took a breather as the reservoirs at Juam Dam and Sueo Dam rose slightly due to the welcome rain this spring in the Yeongsan River and Seomjin River areas. I will do my best,” he said.
