The Seoul Metropolitan Government approved the use of the square, which the Red Devils applied for on the 17th, following a meeting of the Gwanghwamun Square Advisory Group on the followingnoon of the 22nd. Accordingly, the installation of facilities for the event, such as the stage, will begin at 0:00 on the 24th, and the first street cheering will be held at 10:00 pm on the same day in time for the match between Korea and Uruguay.
The Red Devils are preparing for the event, predicting that up to 10,000 citizens will gather at the plaza on the day of the match.
Seoul street cheering for this World Cup was in a state where the Korea Football Association had even finished working-level discussions with Seoul last month, but the event was canceled following the Itaewon disaster occurred. Afterwards, the Seoul branch of the Red Devils acted as an organizer and promoted street cheering and applied for permission to use Gwanghwamun Square.
The period of use of the square permitted by the final decision on this day is from the 24th to the 3rd of the following month. Street cheering will be held around 10:00 pm on the 24th and 28th, and around 0:00 on the 3rd of the following month, when the Korean national team’s World Cup group stage matches are held.
The Jongno-gu Office requested supplementary measures, saying that the safety management plan for the event the previous day was insufficient. In response, the Red Devils took additional measures and resubmitted the plan to the district office in the morning, and the district office went into re-examination in the followingnoon.
The number of security personnel for the event has also increased significantly to 340 people. In addition, following consultation with the police, one road that faces the plaza is controlled, a safety fence is placed around the perimeter of the plaza, and an entrance to the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts is created to induce crowd flow. During the time when street cheering takes place, two bus stops on the side of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts adjacent to Gwanghwamun Square are temporarily closed. From 6 pm to 12 pm on the 24th and 28th, and from 8 pm the previous day (December 2) to 2 am the next day on the 3rd of the following month (starting at 0:00), all 22 bus routes passing through the stop pass without stopping. .
Gwanghwamun Station on Subway Line 5 will also pass without stopping if necessary. On the 24th and 28th, when the 1st and 2nd games of the group league are held, the subway service will be increased by 12 times, and on the 3rd of next month, when the 3rd game will be held, the last train time will be extended by 2 hours until 3:00 am at the terminal station. In line with the game’s end time, bus service will be increased and the last bus time will be extended.
