“Guyana Mining Commission: Updates on AEX Permits and Approvals in 2023”

2023-04-28 00:25:14

The rate of issuance of operating permits (AEX), following experiencing a sharp drop in 2020 with the Covid-19 crisis (only 13 AEX issued or extended), has recovered strongly since 2021 (19 AEX) and 2022 ( 27 EX). With the mining commission held on Wednesday, a total of 14 AEX were issued or renewed during the first four months of 2023, detailed the prefect in his press release.

Five new operating authorization application files (AEX) were examined during the meeting: four files received a favorable opinion from the majority of the members of the commission and 1 file received an unfavorable opinion from the majority of the members of the commission. 1 file was presented to the members for information on the follow-up given to the request for renewal of the authorization of a mining operator, file examined during a previous commission with a favorable opinion.

Thus, a significant number of files were presented during this commission in accordance with the commitments to reduce the timeframes for the examination of AEX application files by the State services in Guyana, recalled by the prefect during the meeting of April 17 with all the players in the legal gold sector, the presidency of the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana and elected Guyanese parliamentarians. The next mining commission is scheduled for May 17 and will examine 5 additional cases, and three mining commissions are already scheduled by June 30.

As a reminder, this commission is made up of representatives of the State, local authorities, mining operators, approved environmental protection associations, a qualified person appointed by the prefect because of his skills in environment, the economic sectors concerned and the Grand Customary Council of the Amerindian and Bushinenge Peoples of Guyana.

« The Mining Commission is the body where the arguments of the various stakeholders are confronted, without passion and with great technical rigour. Our commitments to reach a decision of the commission on the AEX in six months are on the way to being kept. For me, it is essential that the State continue its active participation in the development of a legal and responsible Guyanese gold mining industry. “said Thierry Queffelec in his press release.
