Guyana insisted it wants a peaceful solution to its dispute with Venezuela

The Government of Guyana reaffirmed on Tuesday its commitment to a “peaceful solution” to its dispute with Venezuela over the Essequibo regionand welcomed the UN Security Council statement on this issue.

According to EFE, Guyana indicated that it is “committed to the peaceful solution of the dispute with Venezuela in full compliance with international law through the process of the International Court of Justice and expresses its gratitude to the members of the Security Council for their valuable consideration of this issue of great importance for the two countries and the region.”

Also He expressed the hope that the Security Council statement “will contribute to the maintenance of peace and regional security and to ensure that Latin America and the Caribbean remain a zone of peace.”

The Security Council issued a press release on Monday in which its members expressed their concern regarding “the possible escalation of tensions between Venezuela and Guyana.”

They urged the parties to “exercise maximum restraint,” reminding them of their obligations to comply with the provisional measures order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on December 1, 2023.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining regional peace and security and ensuring that the Latin American and Caribbean region remains a zone of peace.

He therefore urged the parties to “resolve their differences by peaceful means and to comply with their obligations under international law and the United Nations Charter.”
