Guterres: Gaza children are dying or watching their parents being killed

ASTANA – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday that children in Gaza are “dying or watching their parents being killed” as a result of Israeli attacks on the Strip.

This came in Guterres’ speech at the 24th Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit held in the Kazakh capital, Astana.

“Children in Gaza are dying, suffering serious injuries and psychological trauma, and watching their parents killed and their homes destroyed,” he added.

The Secretary-General stressed that the scenes experienced by Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip “must stop.”

“We need peace across the Middle East, starting with an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, an end to the bloodshed, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and increased life-saving aid,” he added.

He stressed that there is also a need for “a clear commitment and a road map to ensure the two-state solution and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.”

For 9 months, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza with absolute American support, leaving more than 125,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing amidst massive destruction and famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children.

Tel Aviv continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolutions to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and improve the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
