Guterres calls on Israel and Lebanese factions to cease fire

Washington – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his “deep concern” over the escalation of tensions between Israel and Lebanese factions, calling for a ceasefire.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said in a press statement yesterday, Sunday, that Guterres is deeply concerned about the escalation of tension between Israel and the Lebanese factions.

According to the spokesman, Guterres called on the two parties to “urgently and immediately return to the cessation of hostilities.”

He pointed out that these actions endanger the Lebanese and Israeli populations, as well as threatening regional security and stability.

Earlier on Sunday, the Secretary-General of the Lebanese factions announced the “success” of the military response to Israel’s assassination of the party’s leader, Fouad Shukr, and accused Tel Aviv of “lying and failure.”

He pointed out that “340 rockets were fired at Israeli military sites,” which resulted in the death of an Israeli naval soldier and the injury of two, according to a statement by the Israeli army.

Israeli warplanes also launched more than 40 raids targeting areas in southern Lebanon in the largest attack since the beginning of the confrontations on October 8.

Since that date, Lebanese and Palestinian factions in Lebanon have exchanged daily shelling with the Israeli army across the “Blue Line” separating them, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries, most of them on the Lebanese side.

The factions are linking the cessation of the bombing to Israel ending a war it has been waging with American support on the Gaza Strip since October 7, which has left more than 133,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing.
