In the middle of a visit that the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, made to the San Juan Bautista de La Salle school, in Zipaquirá, where the Colombian president graduated in 1976, an event was recorded that caught the attention of those attending.

In the speech given by the head of state, he “proudly” showed the flag of the M-19, an insurgent group that took over the Palace of Justice in 1985, in the center of Bogotá, before making peace with the Government.

“Let’s see, buddy, bring that flag, because we’re celebrating today. They don’t like us taking it out, right? But it’s not going to be under the mattresses,” Petro said on stage.

And he added: “Today marks another year of the murder of Carlos Pizarro, who was here, in Zipaquirá. And then he is also the young man who went out to change the world…”.

“That generation repealed the Constitution of 1886. No others might. He proclaimed the Constitution of 1991. And today it is part of the Government of Colombia. So the lives of so many people were not lost. Thank you,” said President Petro.

Gustavo Petro said that the young people who accompanied the former M-19 commander Carlos Pizarro “today govern Colombia”

President Gustavo Petro today remembered Carlos Pizarro, the late former commander of the M-19, a guerrilla group of which the current Colombian president was a part. The reflection he made was because just 34 years ago Pizarro was assassinated.

In the message he published, the head of state indicated that the young people who accompanied the former M-19 commander Carlos Pizarro, “today govern Colombia.”

“Carlos Pizarro is reborn from each popular struggle in Colombia. The young man of yesterday who wanted to change the world became a walking warrior who was later able to transform Colombia with peace and with his life,” Gustavo Petro published in his personal X account.

He also indicated: “The generation of young people who accompanied Carlos Pizarro in the M-19 has been fruitful: it repeals the ancient Constitution of 1886, promulgates the Constitution of 1991 and today governs Colombia. With our lives, as Bolívar officers, we are fulfilling… Word yes.”

Petro’s message was a reaction to the publication made by the senator of the Historical Pact María José Pizarro: “34 years ago today, my father was murdered, that day I lost him forever. He made peace and 48 days later they killed him. Still, the women and men of M-19 complied: peace was the path we inherited. 34 years without justice or truth, without knowing who the most responsible are #LosAbrilesDePizarro.”

It should be noted that several weeks ago the Petro Government’s recognition of the theft of Bolívar’s sword, one of the first criminal acts of the M-19, which occurred in January 1974, generated a stir. The event raised deep controversy in the country and revived wounds. from that time of violence.

This week the Ministry of Culture organized different events at the National Museum and the Quinta de Bolívar House Museum. The M-19 flags waved and were displayed in institutional spaces, while protest music played in the background. Harangues were heard in favor of President Gustavo Petro, who belonged to that guerrilla, and praise for Jaime Bateman and Carlos Pizarro, two of its main leaders.

In the middle of the events, there was a discussion in which Otty Patiño participated, one of the co-founders and negotiator of that guerrilla with the Government, today a commissioner for peace. At the National Museum he was received with applause. “I understand the importance of this act of remembrance of the sword, it is to remember the history of this country. We removed Bolívar’s sword from the museum where it was half hidden to say that it continues to be a current element in the lives of Colombians,” Patiño stated on that occasion.

He spoke with Senator María José Pizarro, daughter of Carlos Pizarro, and Vera Grabe, another militant of that guerrilla and current chief negotiator of the Government with the ELN. The controversial thing was that, in the middle of the conversation, they praised the M-19, but they never talked regarding the crimes committed or the victims.
