Gustavo Petro: 15 million hectares must be filled with agriculture – Government – Politics

“The greatest social function of the earth is to feed humanity. If we have 15 million hectares of fertile land conducive to food agriculture, our duty is to fill them with food crops,” President Gustavo Petro said Thursday from Barranquilla, in the middle of the 39th edition of the National Congress of Livestock Farmers. .

In this scenario, the president recognized that a few years ago he had an erroneous perspective regarding how to reform cattle farming in Colombia.

“I have to confess that I had a wrong vision, a few years ago, of what the reform around livestock should be. Looking at what was happening in developed countries, I thought that the path to follow was to leave the cows and bulls permanently in a stable. (…) I thought regarding it because I felt that land that had an agricultural vocation might be freed that way,” he said.

And he went on to say that these static livestock practices occur in Europe due to winter.

In this regard, Petro stated: “Science discovered that the main branch that produces greenhouse gases is this type of livestock” and, in front of the attending farmers, assured that “this activity brings us closer to the extinction of the species”.

The president also referred to the announced purchase of three million hectares from Fedegan and acknowledged that some of his officials believe that there is no capacity to buy them, while others think that flooded land will be sold to them.

However, the president assured that this land will not be delivered ‘black’. That is, the legal and production conditions in which it is located will be verified.
