Among the numerous works designed by Gustave Eiffel, some have become truly emblematic works of a city, a region or even a country. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the death of the famous engineer, a short review of achievements around the world. Because there’s more to life than just the Eiffel Tower.
Eiffel alone symbolizes what we call the Belle Époque. The end of the 19th century and the period before the First World War were synonymous with social progress, a teeming cultural world, and science and technology which were progressing at full speed. France shines. We believe in steam, iron and glass. Universal exhibitions multiplied, the impressionists, literature (with Jules Verne in particular) and art nouveau brought the promise of a new world. All curves, colors, movement. Softer, more beautiful. A new world.
Our old Europe still dominates the lands and seas. Before being mortally torn apart in the trenches, it and its capitals, overflowing with energy, are reinvigorated and are at the cutting edge of technology. Whether it’s Paris, Vienna, London but also Berlin, Lisbon, Budapest or even Brussels. This is the time for joy of living, excitement, daring and absolute confidence in the future. Eiffel is a man of his time, and will leave his mark on it.
