At least six people were shot dead at a parade in Illinois on Monday. Now the first details regarding the victims are known.
At least six people were killed near the city of Chicago on Monday. One of them: Nicolas Toledo. He came to the parade with his family, his granddaughter Xochil Toledo told the Chicago Sun Times.
The 76-year-old Nicolas Toledo originally did not want to go to the parade, but then went and was hit by three bullets and died on the street. “He saved all of our lives,” says his granddaughter. The bullets would have hit her boyfriend, herself or her cousins. “We were all in shock,” said Xochil Toledo. “We cried. We mightn’t believe what had happened. We mightn’t breathe.” Her father was still trying to protect the grandfather and was hit in the arm himself. Her boyfriend was also shot in the back as they tried to flee.
Another victim is Jacki Sundheim. She was a member of a Jewish community, reports the New York Post. “There are no words sufficient to express our deep sadness at Jacki’s death and our condolences to her family and loved ones,” staff members wrote on the synagogue’s website. Sundheim leaves behind a husband and a daughter.
