Witnesses on the Tunisian island of Djerba said on Tuesday that they heard gunfire during the island’s hosting of annual activities at the Ghriba Synagogue.

Local Radio Mosaique said that a policeman was found dead in the port center on the island of Djerba, and gunfire was heard.

And local media confirmed that the security forces were able to eliminate the killer of the security guard in the Aghir sea center in Djerba.

The pioneers of social networking sites circulated videos that they said were from inside the synagogue, which witnessed the accident.

The annual visitation season to the Ghriba Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Africa, attracts hundreds of Jews from Europe and Israel to the island of Djerba, which is a major tourist resort off the coast of southern Tunisia, 500 km from the capital, Tunis.

Security has been tight for Jewish visits since an al Qaeda militant attacked the synagogue in 2002 with a truck bomb, killing 21 Western tourists.
