Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among young Americans

Gun violence has overtaken motor vehicle crashes in terms of fatality, becoming the leading cause of death among young Americans, the US nonprofit newspaper The Trace reported, citing a study by Boston researchers .

For more than 60 years, car crashes have been the leading cause of death for people aged 1 to 24. But since 2017, firearm injuries have become the leading cause of death for this age group, according to the study.

“As progress in reducing motor vehicle crash deaths shows, we are not condemned to accepting a high rate of gun deaths among American children and adolescents,” the researchers wrote.
