Abu Dhabi: The Gulf countries strongly protested the burning of the Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Countries including the UAE and Saudi Arabia issued statements strongly condemning the incident.
In a statement released by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the UAE rejects all kinds of trends that destabilize security, contrary to humanitarian and social values and principles. At a time when the whole world should stand together for tolerance and co-existence, the UAE called for an end to polarizing actions, respect for religious symbols and prevention of hatred and extremism. The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called for dialogue, tolerance and mutual respect and to end hate propaganda.
Qatar’s foreign ministry accused the events in the Danish capital of being provocative and hurting the sentiments of more than two billion Muslims around the world during the holy month of Ramadan. Qatar has alleged that the continuous desecration of the Qur’an in the name of freedom of expression promotes hatred and violence and threatens peaceful coexistence, and the double standard in this matter is clear. Other Gulf countries, including Bahrain and Kuwait, have also registered strong protests over the incident.
