On Friday, July 5, 2024, General Mamadi Doumbouya appointed several advisers to the Prime Minister’s Office, amid the ongoing energy crisis in Guinea. Among them, the appointment of Bangali Martí, former director of the Guinean Electricity Authority under the Alpha Condé regime, is particularly noteworthy.

Bangaly Maty was removed from office in March 2022 and prosecuted by the Court for the Suppression of Economic and Financial Crimes (CRIEF) for embezzlement of public funds, but was eventually acquitted by the Supreme Court on July 18, 2023. Maty retrained as an advisor to the Prime Minister on energy, infrastructure and water, returning at a critical time for Guinea’s energy sector.

The return of Bangaly Maty to the core of public administration shows the government’s desire to rely on proven skills to solve current energy challenges. The move also reflects efforts to overcome internal crises and political obstacles while aiming to better manage energy resources and infrastructure.

The future will tell whether this strategic choice will be able to stabilize and improve Guinea’s energy situation, thus providing a lasting solution to current and future problems.
