Guinean journalists, stand up before the final burial of press freedom! (By Aliou Maci Diallo)

Guinea, the country of inverted pyramids. When we think we have seen the end of the tunnel, we rush deeper. Wasn’t the great writer Tierno Monénembo right to assert that: “Those who should have been the solution to our problems, have become the problems in the light of truth”?

The CNRD and its president arrived with pomp, fanfare and trumpets. At the beginning, there was no shortage of good intentions. Had the colossus of September 5, 2021 hidden his true face or did he seek advice from birds of ill omen? One or the other, what the compass has taken no longer has any bearings. When the supposed ‘savior’ sails in troubled waters, without sail, the ship pitches and heads towards capsizing. Should we remain silent in the face of what is happening and be complicit or take a stand and remain in the annals of history? Everyone just has to choose their side!

A lot has happened in this country. Many evils have been committed. Enough regrets have been confessed. The lessons of life from the birth of this country until now should serve as a lesson. Taking actions and expecting results different from the achievements we have made is the result of a utopia. The change, yes almost all, if not all, Guineans applauded it. The new masters were welcomed as heroes. They came at the right time. But, they make the moment bad through their actions which aim to stifle any dissonant voice. The press is the watchdog of democracy. When a regime rushes towards dictatorship, it attacks this guardian. And this is what we are experiencing.

Attacking Alpha Condé’s regime and doing worse than this leads us to say that it’s white hat and white hat. Jamming radio waves, removing media from Canal Plus packages, worrying certain media people, summoning others or imposing sanctions on them, cutting off the Internet and going so far as to say that it is not a right, this is all that was missing from the moralizing and refounding regime. Journalists, we are the fourth estate. Let us guard this pride and defend our hard-won freedom tooth and nail. Freedom of expression and of the press are essential to any democratic society.

Transitional authorities, restore our rights!!!!
