Guinea: the trade union movement announces strike notice

After three months of negotiations with the government which did not lead to the expected result, the Guinean trade union movement announced this Tuesday, November 6, 2023, a notice of a general strike.

This decision was taken at the end of an extraordinary general assembly held at the labor exchange, in the presence of main union leaders and workers. According to Abdoulaye Sow, general secretary of FESABAG who spoke for all workers, the misunderstanding with the government reached the top: “We have submitted a platform of demands to the authorities. We have been negotiating for three months without success. The incomprehension has reached the peak. This is why we turned to our constituents to find out what action to take. They have just told us that they want us to prepare a strike notice which we will submit in the following hours,” announced the trade unionist as he left the room.

He adds that “The voice of the workers is the voice of God. They are the ones who commissioned us and put us where we are today. So, we went to the negotiating table on their behalf. If there is a misunderstanding, we go back to them. That’s what we did. They told us that we had to file a strike notice. And this is what will be done in the hours to come,” concluded Abdoulaye Sow.

It now remains to be seen whether the authorities will anticipate and make proposals before this deadline expires.
