The Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy has set up points of sale of fish by the kilogram in the Guinean capital with prices set according to quality. Several points of sale were inaugurated this Wednesday, November 29, 2023, by Minister Charlotte Daffé in the company of the governor of the city of Conakry, M’mahawa Sylla.
The Minister of Fisheries indicates that when she took office, she realized that there was a problem with accessibility and availability of fish. And a lot of speculation surrounded this situation. To meet the need, his department has set itself the objective of introducing the sale of fish by the kilogram and, above all, facilitating the availability of fish for the Guinean populations.
“This is why my department took this initiative to install points of sale in all the communes of Conakry, but also, it is something that will continue throughout the country. For this first phase, we will install 25 points of sale. And as you saw with me, fish is actually sold by the kg. We found a partnership with the Industrial Fishing Federation, but also with the Artisanal Fishing Federation, CONAPED basically, the National Confederation of Fishing Professionals in Guinea, so that we can make fish available in these points of sale. sale,” explains Minister Charlotte Daffé.
These points of sale ensure price stability and facilitate access to fish in quality and quantity. The Department of Fisheries and Maritime Economy has set the price per kilogram of fish. The so-called noble species are the most expensive. The kilogram of these varies between 22,500 and 25,000 GNF. “What’s going on today?” A housewife goes to the market, she asks for a fish. The fish is sold at the customer’s expense. Depending on the size, you can ask for up to 50,000 GNF. But here, whatever fish you want, you can buy it. And whatever your budget, you can access the fish. If you need Sinapa or Kessi-Kessi, the price is fixed. You take one or two depending on what you want. If you need a big fish, you get a big fish. If you need small fish, you have the option of having at least two’.
Madam Minister specifies that in these kiosks, customers have the possibility to choose to take small fish or large ones. This is why she believes that the citizens of Conakry will soon storm these points of sale. “I think that if the citizen realizes that there can be two fish at 25,000, or even three fish, I think that the choice is easily made. These are really, really clean outlets. The fish is there and it is well preserved. The cold chain is not broken and that is really important in the consumption of fish because it is a very sensitive commodity which must be well preserved. And today, in all points of sale, you have freezers that are there. There are glaciers to put the ice so as not to interrupt the cold chain at all. So, I call on the populations to come, to find, to stock up. In these points of sale, they find quality, but also quantity. We will ensure that there is never a break,” she reassures.
The governor of the city of Conakry, retired general M’mahaw Sylla, welcomes the realization of this initiative which makes effective the sale of fish per kilogram at a reasonable price set by the State.
The national director of the maritime economy, Ibrahima Diallo, indicates that the institution of the sale of fish by the kilogram is a first in Guinea. According to him, beyond the 25 points of sale established in Conakry, in 2024, the project will be expanded within the country to reach the different prefectures.
“The objective is to facilitate accessibility to fish on the market. Each time, we are told that fish is expensive or that there is a shortage of fish. We seek for these points of sale to be regulators to stabilize the price of fish on the market. This is the objective of the ministry,” underlined Mr. Diallo.
Finally, he warns that agents will be on the ground to ensure compliance with the prices set by his department.
