Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo announced the appointment of Geraldo Martins as prime minister on Monday. Geraldo Martins is an influential member of the coalition that won the recent legislative elections, associated with the historic party PAIGC. This decision was formalized by a decree published by the presidency on social networks.

A former finance minister, Geraldo Martins also holds the post of vice-president of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), the main component of the Pai-Terra Ranka coalition. In the June elections, this coalition obtained an absolute majority of 54 seats in the National Assembly, thus creating a situation of cohabitation with President Embalo.
The appointment of Mr. Martins was proposed to Mr. Embalo by Pai-Terra Ranka. Shortly before this announcement, the presidency announced the immediate resignation of the government of Nuno Gomes Nabiam. The Madem G15, the president’s political party, won only 29 seats in the legislative elections, a defeat widely attributed by observers to internal dissension and the fall in the price of cashew nuts, an important source of income for the population.
Guinea-Bissau, which faces chronic instability, has experienced a series of coups or coup attempts since its independence from Portugal in 1974, the latest dating back to February 2022.
