The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, defended this Tuesday “dialogue and diplomacy” to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, which has worsened following Russia’s recognition of the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine.
This was expressed during a virtual press conference to discuss the project for the Association Law between the United States and Ecuador, promoted by Democratic Senator Bob Menéndez, president of the Foreign Relations Committee of the United States Upper House.
Lasso affirmed that “Ecuador aspires to dialogue and diplomacy to resolve eventual conflicts” and considered it “strange” that a crisis of these characteristics is occurring in the 21st century.
“Ecuador will always bet on peace, respect for multilateralism, and we will follow the line defined by the United Nations,” said the president.
The Government of Ecuador began last week a census of Ecuadorians in Ukraine to design an action plan in the face of tension in the region.
The crisis in Eastern Europe has worsened in recent hours following Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, in the Ukrainian region of Donbas, and announced the dispatch of Russian troops.
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, considered this Tuesday the “start of the Russian invasion” of Ukraine and announced sanctions once morest Russian financial institutions and the deployment of troops in the Baltic republics.
