The Paraguayan Football Federation (APF) announced on Saturday that Argentinian Guillermo Barros Schelotto was no longer the coach of the Paraguay national team.
The APF announced “the completion of the process led by coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto at the head of the Paraguay senior national team”, in a brief press release published on Saturday evening.
“We wish him and his coaching team every success and we thank them for their commitment and dedication at the helm of the Albirroja,” added the APF.
Barros Schelotto’s dismissal follows a 0-0 draw once morest Peru at home and a 1-0 defeat also at home to Venezuela in the first double-header of South American qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, which will be organized by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
His compatriot Daniel Garnero, current coach of Libertad de Asuncion, leader of the Paraguayan closing championship, is expected to replace him, according to the local press.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto thus becomes the first coach to be sacked in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which grants six places in the tournament and, for the seventh, the possibility of a play-off once morest a team from another continent.
The 50-year-old coach took charge of the Paraguayan team for 17 matches, with 4 wins, 4 draws and 9 defeats.
Paraguay has not qualified for a World Cup since South Africa 2010, where it reached the quarter-finals, its best historical performance.
